Military Overview by Country

Midgard

Of the three nations, Midgard’s military is by far the most powerful. They have the most extensively trained troops who are able to hone their skills to amazing levels. There are several reasons why this is so. The first of which is that the soldiers of Midgard are all volunteer. There has never been any form of conscription in the country’s entire military history, and so only those who truly want to join up do so. This means that for the most part, the military is a career rather than a short term of service, although soldiers are free to retire at any time there is no conflict occurring. Secondly, the training of the soldiers, while not brutal, is certainly very harsh and unforgiving, and training related fatalities are not uncommon. This assures that those who truly have potential work their way through and those that are discouraged leave before they become official soldiers. Lastly, absolutely everyone starts at the lowest rank of their service. Even the most celebrated generals had to climb their way up from the lowly status of private. Because of this, the soldiers of Midgard are certain that their commanders not only know what they’ve been through, but can effectively command them based on what they can do. Joining the military is rather simple. One simply has to go to Prontera and be sworn in. After that, the person is shipped off to either Izlude for swordsmanship, Payon for archery, Alberta for sailing, or if they have a spark of magic ability, they’re sent to Geffen for magiknight training. Sadly, most aspiring magiknights never make it through that training, and are sent to Izlude to become knights instead.

Schwarzwald

In comparison to Midgard, the land of Schwarzwald’s military is much more class based and structured. They also have the largest active military of the three nations, being that a term of service grants food, shelter, and work for a period of years. Lower classes, such as factory workers and miners that wish to join simply go to see a recruiting officer. Based on the needs of the military at the time, they’re sent off to a different area for training in archery or swordsmanship. The sons of merchants or nobility, and even the odd honestly talented individual that gets noticed, are sent off to the Schwarzwald Military Academy to receive in depth tactical training and an education. Upon graduating, these persons are immediately given the rank of Second Lieutenant and move on from there. While there currently is not one active, in times of great stress Schwarzwald has been known to initiate a draft and press gang any able bodied men or women into their military to help defend the land.

Arunafelz

The fighting forces of Arunafelz are by far the least structured of the three nations. The military is composed entirely of worshippers, travelers, or even high ranking members of any one of the churches who have felt a ‘calling’ to defend their particular faith. At this point, they are sent to the city of Veins, where they receive training in whatever field suits them. Novice soldiers generally serve as the police force for the country of Arunafelz. In time, they may attain a higher ranking and begin travelling as keepers of their faiths, or elect to stay behind and act as temple guards. Because of this, the nation has no formal standing military in times of peace. Their templars are sent out where needed in the event of a threat to a church somewhere, and peace is kept by the various churches in the country by an unspoken agreement that if it needs to be done, it might as well be done by them. They don’t worry too much, though. Even though they only have the second largest ‘military’ of the nations, it is a well known fact that any one church has thousands of deeply devoted followers among every country that would quickly form into fanatical militias if the need arose.

Eastern Islands

The eastern islands are each separate entities, and as a result the military forces of each are vastly different.

Gonryun

Being a collection of small, floating landmasses, Gonryun has never needed a large military presence. Boasting an incredibly small police force employed by the noble family, they are nevertheless not individuals one would like to get on the bad side of. Historically, in the rare event that Gonryun has been attacked, they have hired mercenary troops to aid in defending their lands.

Amatsu

Amatsu itself is patrolled by a number of elite guards hired by the lord of the city that keep the general peace. Aside from that, the only military forces to speak of are the private armies that each lesser noble employs for his or her own benefit and protection. Soldiers are given over to training when they are very young, no more than six years old, and they stay with their masters until death or dishonor removes them from service. Bound by a rigid code of honor, the soldiers of Amatsu are known for being nearly fearless in combat situations.

Louyang

The city of Louyang is protected by a small but skilled military that doubles as a police force. Called the Louyang Imperial Army, they are skilled combatants that are fiercely loyal to their own people, but are usually harsh when dealing with foreign offenders.

Ayothaya:

Aside from Ayothaya’s token police force, the only protection the city has is a grouping of constantly changing mercenaries tasked with protecting merchants and the city’s livelihood.
